The Director of Communications, Marketing and Outreach understands that words matter, and can use them effectively to inform and engage diverse internal and external audiences in support of the mission of the Institute of Politics (IOP).
The mission at Harvard's Institute of Politics is to create the future of politics and public service every day, inspiring undergraduates to lead lives of purpose by committing themselves to the practice of politics and governing, and to public service and the countless opportunities to serve at home and around the world.
To assist our Institute with that mission, specifically, the successful candidate will:
Insure the communications strategy and goals are effectively communicated across the IOP
Teach, manage, and lead IOP students in communications activities which support their participation in IOP programming.
Understand and effectively direct the use of digital, audio, video, and print platforms.
Have strong writing skills and ability to leverage those skills across multi-platform communication channels – targeting diverse audiences.
Have strong management skills necessary to provide strategic communication and messaging support to staff and students.
Must have an imagination.
Serve as the IOP's primary on/off- camera spokesperson for the organization.
Build and maintain organizational multimedia list, updating as needed.
Bring to the IOP a diverse set of personal media relationships, to be leveraged in support of the Institute.
Be an experienced manager who can lead a high performance communications team.
Set up benchmarks and guidelines for ascertaining effectiveness of communications strategies and communications staff.
Manage outside vendors effectively
Will develop and oversee a substantial communications/marketing/website budget.
Have passion to lead and manage by example and with a keen appreciation of IOP's commitment to inspiring the next generation of political and civic leaders

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience in Communications or Marketing.
Master's Degree preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Expertise and knowledge of best practices in technology and communications. Experience or interest in politics preferred. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as social media platforms and web tools. Interest in working with students. Excellent organizational and time management skills to meet external and internal deadlines is required. Ability to interact and influence diverse people to meet goals and deadlines, build and manage teams and work collaboratively with staff, Board members, consultants, and students.
