GMA is seeking candidates for an internship in our Communications and Marketing group to support the Department around key organization and industry initiatives including Facts Up Front and SmartLabel as well as the cross-sector Food Waste Reduction Alliance.Your key contacts will be GMA staff and member companies’ staff on an as needed basisYour day-to-day responsibilities would include:
Support the daily assembly and distribution of media clips for GMA and weekly assembly and distribution of media clips for Food Waste Reduction Alliance
Perform basic research on industry issues, reports, reporter/media outlets, legislation, Members of Congress, GMA members, etc.
Assist with social content creation and learn basic social media strategy
Support media pitching efforts
Update and help to implement changes to GMA website/blog
Monitor legislative activity in-person/on the Hill and online/in the media
Other communications, marketing, research, or administrative duties as needed.
By the end of this internship, you should have learned the Communications & Marketing Department intern should have a preliminary understanding of media relations and integrated communications practices to provide information in a range of channels to reach external and internal audiences. Specific areas of work/learning could include media monitoring and clips assembly and distribution, media list building, research, reporter outreach/pitching, social content creation, familiarity with the media landscape related to the food/beverage/CPG industry, in addition to basic administrative/professional responsibilities.
The best candidates will possess:
Experience using social media (Required)
Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, and/or social networking tools such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck. (This would be beneficial, but is not essential.)
Strong written and interpersonal communications skills (Required)
Collaborative, Team-Player (Required)
Has a sense of professionalism (Required)
Ability to multi-task, prioritize work, ability to time manage (Required)
Some experience with blogging, podcasting, and other online publishing (Preferred)
Experience in research, copy editing and writing (Preferred)
Understanding of public policy and legislative process (Preferred)
Must be a student currently enrolled and working towards a Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree in communications, PR, journalism, Marketing or related discipline
