The individual filling this position will use his/her experience and knowledge of current branding and marketing trends to develop, implement and oversee both holistic and specific branding and marketing communications plans, with special emphasis on recruitment marketing communications. A primary responsibility of the position will be writing and managing image and recruitment projects. He/she will be responsible for developing and writing marketing communications materials including but not limited to: brochures, advertising, digital communications and web sites, working closely with Enrollment Management and Admissions and in collaboration with schools, departments and programs of the University. Writing for various audiences-ensuring appropriate tone and style-on multiple platforms is required. The Marketing Communications Manager will ensure the University marketing materials meet message, quality and consistency standards. Most tasks involve self-direction, creativity, solid communications and organizational skills and an outstanding work ethic. This manager must be able to interact well and take direction from a wide variety of people within the University community, and have a solution-oriented outlook. The position requires the ability to effectively manage a high volume of projects under tight deadlines. The Marketing Communications Manager reports to the Director of Creative Services and works collaboratively with the marketing communications, graphic design and web teams.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Develops and implements marketing and marketing communications projects- with a special emphasis on recruitment- from concept to completion, including message development, writing, project management, client interaction and other related duties.
Works with individuals to improve the quality of marketing efforts for the departments and programs of the University he/she is assigned to and ensure that their marketing plans are aligned with the
University's brand, are well-developed and successfully implemented.
Writes key messages and adapts them based upon target audience and purpose.
Writes and manages production of brochures, newsletters, fact sheets, advertising copy, web site content and other marketing communications materials from concept to completion.
Works closely with graphic designers to ensure look and feel is effective for audience and message.
Oversees multiple projects of varying complexities and manages project resources well, keeping clients, team members and supervisors appraised of project status.
Acts as project manager and liaison between university clients/departments and vendors.
Performs related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Higher education and/or experience in an agency directly writing for higher education clients or the 15-25 year-old demographic.
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, advertising, English, or related field from an accredited institution. A minimum of 10 years of experience in branding, communications, marketing, advertising, management or related work.
Demonstrated ability to not only create strategy and messaging, but also to be an excellent, detailed project manager.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Understanding of and experience in brand identity and brand management.
Copy-writing experience, including evidence of effectively writing in a style and tone suited to target audiences, messaging, proofreading and excellent command of grammar.
Proven ability to work successfully with clients and staff; knowledge and experience with project management; and experience working with advertising firms and other vendors.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Proven ability to develop and implement marketing strategies.
Experience in branding and messaging; experience in higher education.
Ability to be detail-oriented and meet demanding timelines.
Ability to effectively work with multiple clients on multiple, simultaneous projects.
Ability to function as both a team leader and team member.
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
Very high level of communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization, including Cabinet, deans, faculty, Public Affairs colleagues and others.
Ability to conceptualize and interpret verbal and written language exceptionally well to ensure everyone on a project understands the direction and goals
Very high level of organizational skills to ensure multiple deadlines and milestones are met.
Collaboration with the marketing communications, print and web teams is critical. There will be overlapping areas of responsibility at times, therefore proactive, frequent, productive communication between team members based on the specific project focus is essential.
Flexibility, ability to effectively handle ambiguity and changing deadlines and direction, and an ability to work within a matrix environment.
